Beat the Heat (and the Energy Bill) this Summer with These Six Tips

Summer is almost upon us and amongst the Christmas holidays looming on the horizon, so are the long, hot summer days. While we are looking forward to the much-needed warm weather, the energy bill that comes along with summer-long usage can rattle the finances. Not only do your finances take a hit from the constant thrum of the air-conditioner, but the environment also doesn't fare too well either.

We’ve listed some ways you can beat the heat this summer, as well as shave some dollars off your monthly energy bill.

•    Shade, seal and paint with cooler colours

In Australia, North and West facing areas of the house are the most likely to attract the sun. Usually, that’s why there are lots of windows in these areas to attract and make use of the natural light. However, this also means attracting the heat. In the dead of summer, these rooms can become almost sauna-like, and it’s difficult to refrain from cranking the air-con.

However, by investing in some blinds for the windows facing the direct sunlight, you can help reduce the heat in the room. You can also seal, or reseal, your windows to prevent cool air from escaping/keeping the hot air from entering.

Furthermore, while darker colours might be in style for home design, lighter shades tend to lead to a cooler house.

•    Monitor your air-conditioner usage

We all love the feeling of walking into a lovely, cold room on a boiling, hot day. But, that lovely feeling comes with a hefty energy price. Each degree cooler (or warmer in winter) can add 10% to the running cost. And generally, if the air conditioner varies between 8 degrees of the outside temperature, the efficiency falters. By keeping between the 8-degree mark, you’ll not only save on the wear and tear of your aircon motor; you’ll save big on the energy bill.

•    Close doors

Like during winter when you isolate areas in your home you don’t need to be heated, the same applies to summer time. By just closing the doors to areas in your home you don’t frequent, you allow your air conditioner to effectively and efficiently cool the rooms you spend the most time in. This gives it a break from overworking – and can help to preserve the engine for longer.

•    Make the most of your environment

The Freo Doctor is the best breeze you can take advantage of in the height of summer. Opening your home in the evening to let it flush the heat from your home cools the house quickly and inexpensively. Make sure you close your windows up early the next day, before the hot air settles in for the day.

•    Insulate!

An investment worth considering – insulation works to keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter. You’ll notice the effects on your home and energy bill.
